Hitting the stage at 9pm, Keys smashed into her hit Empire State of Mind. Getting to the point, she was quick to follow with Karma.  Fans were on their feet in anticipation and the cheering was phenomenal.

She is comfortable being louder, simpler and straighter. She is happy to role play and play act (even if it adds a layer of cheese to a strong song such as You Don’t Know My Name).

An interesting comparison was her support, John Legend, a songwriter not in her shadow by any means but a performer not made for this room despite his efforts throw to the back stalls.

Notwithstanding movers such as Get Lifted and Used To Love You, his preference for slow building mid tempo soul ballads will be all the more rewarded at his more intimate solo shows, which will take in the Opera House.

All that said, Keys still avoids the flashy stage production, multiple costume changes and ”augmented” live vocals of some of her arena peers. We got dancers but not hydraulics; we got some sequenced instruments but not all taped; we got the glittery dress but only for the finale.

Alicia Keys And John Legend Tribute Mandela With Bob Marley Song

Alicia Keys and John Legend

Alicia Keys was moved when she learned of the passing of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela while touring in Australia.

During her concert in the Yarra Valley, Alicia Keys and her tourmate John Legend performed a music tribute to the late Madiba of an acoustic version of reggae legend Bob Marley’s classic “Redemption Song.”
