Michael Jackson’s estate sues popcorn maker

In a complaint filed in the Central District of California last week, the executors of Jackson’s estate, and Triumph International Inc., a company controlled by the executors that holds many of the estate’s publicity and trademark rights, allege that GourmetGiftBaskets.Com’s domain name is a trademark violation.

The KingOfPop.com, which sells flavors like Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, Strawberry Shortcake, and Dark Chocolate Caramel, was started in 2012 after executives bought the domain name of a former Michael Jackson fan website.

The estate claims the site tried to defend its use of the popular singer’s name by saying the word “pop” is a “nickname for popcorn products.”

Jackson’s estate wants the KingOfPop site shut down and is seeking an undisclosed amount in damages.
