BIRTHDAY GIRL: Supermodel Naomi Campbell
NAOMI CAMPBELL marked her 44th birthday today (May 22) by uploading a ‘throwback’ picture of herself as a baby on Instagram.
In the cute snap, the supermodel is cradled in a chair positioned against a floral backdrop.
She captioned the picture with a thank you message to her mother: “#thank you Mum for giving me #LIFE x M“ (SIC).
Born in Croydon, South London, Campbell was raised by her Jamaican mother Valerie.
Generally considered one of the five original supermodels, she was the first black model to appear on the cover of TIME magazine, French Vogue and Russian Vogue as well as the first British black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue.
Campbell’s first public appearance came at the age of seven, when she starred in Bob Marley’s 1978 music video Is This Love.

She caught her big break in the fashion industry when she was scouted at the age of 15 and quickly established herself as one of the world’s most sought-after models.
Known for domination of the world’s catwalks and runways, the superstar has also done an incredible amount of charity work in her time. She began fundraising with Nelson Mandela in 1993, and in 1997 he named her “Honorary Granddaughter” for endless activism.
In 2005, she established Fashion For Relief and hosted its first charity fashion show to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Since its conception in 2005, Fashion For Relief has presented shows in New York, London, Cannes, Moscow, Mumbai and Dar es Salaam and has raised millions of dollars for various causes.
Campbell has also been a staunch activist for diversity in the fashion industry and has regularly called on designers to employ more black and Asian models.
